Amrita Bars

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comYou wouldn’t believe the amount of things I’ve been up to lately. With just having recently moved, starting a new job and doing other work in my spare time, the days just don’t seem long enough. At times like these, I’m really grateful to have easy “grab and go” foods like fruit, nuts and seeds, and energy bars. Of course, that’s where Amrita comes in! Amrita makes a lot of unique-flavored nutrition bars, that not only taste great…they are also made with really high-quality ingredients. As their name would suggest, they are made out of dried fruits, seeds and other gluten, dairy and soy-free nutritious foods. Are you curious about these bars and what flavors you would like the most? Read on to find out!

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comThe first bar I tried happened to be the Apricot Strawberry. When I first opened the package, the smell actually reminded me of a PB&J sandwich (despite being completely free of peanuts and gluten). I think I was picking up the sunflower seeds and tahini, which often give off a rich and nutty flavor. Once I tasted the bar I could taste the apricots as well as the strawberries and dates mixed in. I couldn’t taste the chia flour or brown rice and they didn’t seem to affect the texture at all. Overall, I would say this was a great bar to start out with!

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comI’m not sure what paradise would taste like, but it must be something like this Pineapple Chia bar. First off, with it being summer I find that these bars all have really appropriate flavors. Along with pineapple, this treat also contains cranberries, sunflower and sesame seeds, chia seeds, coconut and brown rice protein. It’s great that a little bar like this also has the benefit of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids, along with 4g of fiber and 7g of protein!

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comOne of my favorite bars, not surprisingly, was the Apple Cinnamon. This seriously tasted like apple pie in bar form. What I love about Amrita bars is that you get so much fresh flavor, and all without added sweeteners other than the ones in dried fruit. I find that these bars are similar in texture to Larabars, but the combination of seeds, brown rice protein and dried fruit makes them a lot more filling. These definitely are more of a snack than a meal replacement, but they are really satisfying in-between meals!

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comAnother fun, tropical flavor is the Mango Coconut. When it comes to dried fruit, mango and coconut are some of my favorites for their ultra-sweet flavors. Because this bar is also balanced with a mix of seeds, you don’t get as much of a sugar rush as plain fruit can often deliver for some people. This bar would be also be delicious if you blended it into a smoothie (seriously), or if you cut it up and placed it on top of a smoothie with banana, mango and coconut.

I was worried that the Cranberry Raisin bar might be a little sour, but I think it was another winner! The texture reminds me a little of an oatmeal raisin cookie and I’m not complaining! I notice that many of the bars are made with similar ingredients, but with the addition of the special dried fruits they really take on a unique taste. Plus, they don’t make a mess when you eat them and are very portable and for a snack that also happens to be raw.

Review of Amrita Bars on anotherhungryvegan.comLast but not least…the Chocolate Maca bar. Where oh where do I begin with this one? Cacao and maca are an incredible combination,  and this bar proves that. These superfoods are great for giving you energy as well as helping with hormonal issues. Another fantastic thing about this chocolatey bar is that it doesn’t melt in the heat, unlike many energy/protein bars made with chocolate. Though the flavor sounds more like a sweet dessert, this actually makes a great morning or mid-morning snack. Instead of reaching for coffee or energy drinks, I would recommend picking up one of these instead.

So, did hearing about all the different bars entice you? I hope so! If you’re curious where you can pick up some super tasty and nutritious Amrita bars for yourself, visit their store locator. You can also add some to your cart when you shop on their online store, either way I hope you can enjoy the bars for yourself. Bearded Brothers Energy Bars

IMG_6928
I reached out to Bearded Brothers after hearing about their raw, vegan, gluten/soy free energy bars and I am so thankful that they were able to send some for me to try out! I also found out that their bars are organic and made in small-batches, and even the wrappers are compostable which makes them perfect to enjoy on-the-go! Continue reading

The Bodacious Blueberry Vanilla has a sweet but light, natural blueberry taste with just a hint of vanilla. These also have dates but luckily they didn’t have too strong of a flavor either. The only raw bar that I have had besides this one that was blueberry-flavored was a Larabar and to be honest I really didn’t care for it. These Bearded Brothers bars have a much better balance of flavors, and due to their added brown rice protein, chia seeds, and almonds they actually keep you full for a decent amount of time.

IMG_7072Next, I chose the Fabulous Ginger Peach made with almonds, walnuts, dates, peaches, ginger, chia seeds, and sea salt. The bar did have a fabulous flavor with fresh ginger, sweet peach and a slightly nutty taste. I loved the fact that the ginger wasn’t too overpowering, because while I love ginger, I think it should still allow for the other flavors to come through. This seemed to have really unique flavor combos that you don’t typically find in a vegan energy bar. I think this would be a great option to have if you’re not feeling too well but you’re in need of some added nutrients in the form of an easy snack.

IMG_7224Speaking of unique flavors, this Mighty Maca Chocolate got me really excited. If you know me, you’d know that I LOVE chocolate and maca together in smoothies and desserts for the chocolate-malt flavor. While this wasn’t quite a candy bar, its cocoa and maca flavor are just apparent enough that they don’t take over the flavor of the other ingredients. This bar also has cinnamon, cashews, cacao nibs, and coconut palm nectar in addition to the other base ingredients that are found in most of the other bars. I love the fact that this wasn’t too chocolately also because 1) I can be very sensitive to too much cocoa and 2) it doesn’t melt in the package like a chocolate-coated bar would. Oh and 3) it’s much healthier that way!

IMG_7328The name of this Radical Raspberry Lemon bar speaks for itself. This one’s a little different with ingredients including sun butter (one of my favorite non-nut butters), figs, raspberries and lemon. I also found that this bar was a lot softer than the others, probably because there weren’t any nuts here. This is also a very allergen-friendly bar because of that! The texture reminded me of the filling of a fig newton, yet it wasn’t overly sweet and the raspberries and lemon extract really came out. If you’re looking for a lower-calorie option among these bars, this is a fantastic option!

IMG_7387Another bar that is lower in fat and calories is the Outrageous Orange Kale. This bar is also nut-free, and made with hemp and chia seeds, figs, dates, and dried beets. This is one of the first bars I have tried with dried kale or beets, but I could hardly even taste them! The orange extract is a nice touch, and I got just the right amount of flavor from it. Did I say the Radical Raspberry Lemon bar tasted like a fig newton? This one tasted even more like the infamous cookie’s filling. It was wonderfully soft and chewy. Don’t be turned away by the name of this bar, it’s actually one of my favorites!

IMG_7460Lastly, the Colossal Coconut Mango bar with dried mango, almonds, dates, chia seeds and shredded coconut. Personally, I love the tropical feeling of eating coconut and mango together and this did not disappoint! The dried mango added a nice sweetness and I loved the fact that I got a good taste of the coconut as well. For a bar with so few ingredients, this one still tastes like a sweet coconutty, fruity treat!

Have you tried any of these bars before? Let me know what you thought of them in the comments! Or, if you haven’t tried them before, which flavor sounds the most exciting to you? If you’re interested in trying them, you can visit the Bearded Brothers Webstore to buy yourself a variety pack of each flavor!

Brad’s Raw Kale Chips

IMG_769411
Honestly, I do not consider myself to be a chip-lover. Unless of course, we are talking about kale chips! Brad’s Raw Foods makes these incredible kale chips along with other raw snacks that are the perfect swap for traditional chips and crackers. They even make Raw Onion Rings that I have tried personally. Now, with kale chips…not all are created equal. In my opinion the best kale chips have a nice crunchiness and texture, with great seasoning, and of course healthy ingredients. Lucky for me, these Brad’s Raw Kale Chips fit that criteria exceptionally well. They are all gluten free, non-gmo and organic, kosher, and they are made by a fantastic company. I hunted down all 5 flavors and tried them each. Continue reading

IMG_0327
Starting off, I would like to talk about the Pina Kale-ada flavor. It seems like more and more kale chip companies are releasing a sweeter option, usually with pineapple, coconut, mango, and even chocolate. While I don’t generally associate kale with sweetness unless we are talking about a green smoothie or juice, these kale chips were a nice surprise. I loved the depth of flavor that they had as well. Odd enough, the ingredients (kale, pineapple, bananas, coconut, lemon juice, and himilayan salt) would probably make a refreshing smoothie as well!

 IMG_7716
By the sounds of it, the Naked Kale Chips would seem to be very plain. However, that was not the case at all with these. I look at them more like they are the “original” flavor because they contain a lot of the traditional kale chip ingredients. I loved the subtle flavors of the cashews and sunflower seeds, and the chickpea miso was a pleasant surprise. These would be a great flavor if you aren’t wanting something too “out-there” or if you are the type of person who appreciates flavors that are not too strong.

IMG_7710
The Vampire Killer kale chips sound a little overbearing. As in, you wouldn’t think of eating these in public in fear that your breath would be overtaken with garlic. Actually, that’s not the case at all! The garlic was definitely there, but it didn’t take over the flavor of the kale chips themselves. There are also some scallions listed in the ingredients, but those didn’t overpower the chips either. Unless you have an aversion to garlic, these are great!

IMG_8479
I really wasn’t sure what to expect from these Nasty Hot kale chips. I was afraid that they would be way too spicy, just from the name alone. However, I actually really liked these a lot! They had a kick to them but it was more of an aftertaste. I don’t mind spicy flavors, but I don’t care for foods or flavorings that are so hot that I can’t really taste anything because my tastebuds are on fire. I think these were almost identical to the Naked flavor in exception to the Jalapenos in the ingredients.

IMG_8602
The Nacho kale chips aren’t quite what I had in mind. While I would never confuse these for cheesy “nacho” tortilla chips, they do have quite a wonderful flavor. I don’t know if I would describe it as a nacho-taste though. They made me think of what you would get if you combined the Vampire Killer with the Naked kale chips. You’d be surprised at how quickly these kale chips grow on you even if you don’t like them at first!

Alive & Radiant – Kale & Veggie Krunch

IMG_0936Recently I purchased these products from Alive & Radiant online because I had a coupon for them. These were also varieties that I couldn’t find in stores near me, and I liked the Kale Krunch flavors from this company so much that I wanted to try the rest of their snacks. Here is what I thought about all of these.

IMG_0949The Superfood was incredible! It reminded me a lot of the plain Kale Krunch that I’ve tried before, but this was even more flavorful. Kale chips on their own are really good for you, but when you add these superfoods it makes it an even healthier choice for a snack. The Spicy Superfood was also really good, just incredibly spicy! I guess the silver lining is that I drank a lot of water while I ate this bag.

IMG_0926The Veggie Krunch were something really different for me. These are similar to the kale chips in terms of crunchiness and texture, but the flavors were completely different. Teriyaki Greens was my favorite of them all. I loved the coconut and the Asian-inspired flavors that were in this mix. Arugula Cabbage was more mild in flavor but I did enjoy it. My least favorite was probably the Sweet Onion, but I actually did still like this one. It felt like eating raw onion rings, but they had a crunch that you would get from the fried version. The only drawback is that you get some pretty strong breath after snacking on these.

Divvies – Kettle & Caramel Corn

tumblr_mx00z5kKqE1s3uefeo1_1280I’ve always been a big fan of popcorn, and especially the sweeter flavors of kettle and caramel corn. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of popcorn you can buy either isn’t vegan or it’s really bad for you, filled with a ton of bad ingredients including trans fats. I still enjoy making popcorn at home, but it’s nice to be able to find some delicious options at the store. That’s where Divvies comes in, and they also make other foods. I can’t wait to try the rest! Continue reading

tumblr_mx00z5kKqE1s3uefeo2_1280This is some of the best vegan caramel corn I’ve ever tried! As you can see it is also allergen-friendly, and free of nuts, eggs, and dairy. My mom loved it also so I shared it with her.

IMG_9925 IMG_9928The kettle corn has a sweet and subtle flavor, but it is still delicious nonetheless. My only complaint about these is that the bags are so small! Guess I’ll just have to buy more!

Alive & Radiant Foods – Kale Krunch

Kale chips seem to be something that people either love or hate. For me, I wasn’t fond of kale chips the first time I tried them, but later on I grew to crave them. I love the crunchy flavor, and I love eating something like these as a snack knowing that they are much healthier than potato/tortilla/other chips. Kale Krunch from Alive and Radiant Foods has become one of my all-time favorite types of kale chips! They are raw, gluten free, dairy free, organic, and very good for you! I have tried each variety of these and decided to review them here in case anyone is interested.

tumblr_mwwuzjLHbo1s3uefeo1_1280This was the first flavor I tried and even for being plain, it still was very flavorful! I actually had this at school and let some of my classmates try some. I think the verdict for them was that these were “ok”, however I really loved them. For some reason I kept thinking they had a taste that reminded me of cheez-its, probably from the crunch and texture.

tumblr_mx00jkdNVG1s3uefeo1_1280I’ve heard this flavor is pretty popular, and I can see why! This was even better than I remember a lot of ranch chips tasting, and I loved the crunch and flavor these had.

tumblr_mxsb7yZcJe1s3uefeo1_1280Cheezy kale chips are probably my favorite flavors. I love how they got the cheeze flavor from healthy and soy-free sources, like cashews and nutritional yeast. These also had red bell peppers and lemon juice, which I could definitely taste on the chips.

IMG_7657 These were so savory! I really was assuming they would be a little bitter, but they were tasty and the mustard gave them a nice kick. The tarragon was something I picked up more as an aftertaste, but overall I would recommend these.

IMG_7662I was expecting these to be spicy because of the chipotle peppers and paprika, but I think these were a lot like the Quite Cheezy kale chips. They have really similar ingredients to those also, which doesn’t surprise me that they tasted similar.

IMG_8859The hibiscus and pink peppercorn chips were a pleasant surprise. They did have a bit of a kick from the peppercorn, and apparently these also have a chickpea miso, beets, and the hibiscus flower that gives them the pink color. I thought these looked so beautiful with the contrast of the colors. Not bad overall.

Last but not least, the chockalet chip (still can’t get over the name!). I’ve read other reviews online where people said these were gross, and I honestly have no idea what they were talking about. These were probably either my favorite or second favorite flavor of them all! Oddly enough I felt like I was eating chocolate covered granola because they were so crunchy. These would be a great raw, gluten free and healthy dessert-type of snack. They are also very satisfying unlike a lot of chocolate desserts.

Artisana Nut Butters

I’ve seen Artisana products a lot at either the store or online, and I’ve heard that they’re really good for you. They are raw, vegan, and have a very small amount of ingredients in them. I love to buy these packets because they are a better alternative to paying a lot of money for the whole jar, and then discovering that you really don’t like the taste of it.

tumblr_mjyhgkHXGi1s3uefeo1_1280I had a golden delicious apple with a packet of Artisana raw organic pecan butter. Because it is raw, the pecan butter isn’t super sweet. I usually eat nuts raw but I prefer nut butters to be roasted because they have a stronger flavor. This stuff wasn’t bad, and it’s nice to try new things. Next time I would probably add a tiny bit of agave to the pecan butter to have with my apple slices, but that’s just me. Continue reading

tumblr_mk7ktnpdV11s3uefeo1_1280 tumblr_mk7kxkl9OB1s3uefeo1_1280The cashew butter was used to make ants on a log. I was a big fan of this one! The cashews brought out a new, creamy type of nut butter. I would buy this stuff in a jar for sure.

tumblr_mk7lzzzv2P1s3uefeo1_1280The raw walnut butter was only slightly better with the apples than the pecan butter. Raw walnuts can be pretty bitter, at least in my opinion. Of course walnuts are really good for you and when they are raw it seems like your body responds to them much better.

IMG_5458 IMG_5465The Cacao Bliss was exactly that-bliss! It went perfectly with the banana and was almost a dessert on its own! This would be perfect with other fruits like berries. It is a little clumpy and difficult to spread which was the only drawback in my opinion.

IMG_7672I was very curious about how these ones would taste. These seemed like really unusual flavors to me, and I don’t think I’m the only person who would agree with me.

IMG_7687Here I tried a sliced apple with the blue algae (left) and marine phytoplankton (right). The blue algae was the better one of these two. It had an odd sweetness to it, however both flavors did have an oceany hint to them, and the marine phytoplankton was difficult to get used to.

IMG_7826I had these berry nut butters with a sliced banana, and I found that these were much more pleasant in terms of taste. My absolute favorite was the goji and milk thistle that came out an orange color. It had a sweet and creamy mix that wasn’t overpowering unlike what I got from the berry packets.    http://www.artisanafoods.com/

Hail Merry Pecans

tumblr_mw6zr8NVrZ1s3uefeo1_1280Hail Merry is a company I have been buying from for some time. They make really healthy snacks ranging from breakfast items to desserts. I decided to give their pecans a try, and I really enjoyed each flavor.  Continue reading

IMG_7513These are gluten free, non-gmo, and dehydrated pecans with few ingredients, yet a ton of flavor. They are perfect as a snack on their own or on top of salads, which is just one thing that you can pair them with. http://www.hailmerry.com/
