Not only does it have a great deal of plant protein, it also have the benefits of those healthy omega fatty acids that keep you feeling full, especially after a tough workout. The chocolate flavor is my personal favorite, which is why I’m really excited to get to give a bag away to one lucky winner! I also added some Fit Matrix, which aids in workout recovery and immunity, plus some Dark Hazelnut Spread from Golo Foods for flavor and added protein.

Vegan and Gluten-freeThe coffee part of this shake is totally optional, but it does give it that blended espresso and/or frappuccino quality. You could also use decaf coffee or a coffee alternative (such as herbal coffee or something similar) if you’re avoiding caffeine. Personally, I like using cold brew like Chameleon Cold Brew or the coffee concentrate from Trader Joe’s. I find that combining coffee with frozen fruit, protein and healthy fats makes it easier to digest and you don’t feel super jittery afterwards.

Ingredients
  1. 1/4 cup coffee concentrate+3/4 cup water (or 1 cup chilled coffee)
  2. 1 frozen banana
  3. 2 Tbs HempPro 70 Chocolate
  4. 1 tsp FitMatrix
  5. 1/4 tsp maca powder
  6. 2 Tbs GoLo Foods Dark Hazelnut Spread
  7. sweetener to taste
  8. handful of ice
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients into a high-speed blender or food processor and mix until a smooth consistency forms. Mix in additional sweetener or ice if desired.

Chocolate Cocozia & Espresso Shake

Plus it's vegan, gluten-free and delicious! @anotherhungryvegan.comExpo was a lot of fun and all, but I was missing smoothies almost the whole time. I ended up with a few bags of samples to take home (luckily I was able to check a separate suitcase), and I wanted to make something special with some of the items. Cocozia also happened to send me some samples of their Chocolate Coconut Water, and although I’ve been featuring some recipes using it on my Instagram, I couldn’t wait to share this particular recipe! This shake tastes like a delicious frappuccino, but it’s even better. Yes, Starbucks might have coconut milk, but I doubt that they have chocolate coconut water on hand!  Continue reading

Review of Cocozia @anotherhungryvegan.comI’ve done a few recipes on this blog using Cocozia Coconut Water in the past. Their coconut water is organic, vegan, gluten-free and now comes in a few flavors. I love how pure it tastes, and it’s a great addition to my smoothies and shakes as an alternative to non-dairy milks. It has a ton of potassium and electrolytes to keep you feeling hydrated all day long. Fun fact: when I was in high school, I started an exercise routine but that didn’t mean I was eating the healthiest of foods. After a long and tough workout, I would drive over to Starbucks to get a Mocha Frappuccino Light (this was before my vegan days) thinking that it was actually a healthy option. Let’s just say…I’m really glad I crave these much healthier protein shakes instead!

Keep reading on for the recipe, and if you want to purchase some Cocozia for yourself you can do that right here. I also used some samples from my Expo West bag including one of these Hemp Pro 70 sample packs from Manitoba Harvest. I’ve also been obsessed with these Italian Espresso Coconut Chips from Made in Nature. They have a smoked, espresso tastes and add a nice crunch to any recipe!

You won’t find anything artificial in here, which is just the way I like my smoothies. Let me know what kinds of recipes you would use Cocozia’s chocolate or original coconut water for. Would you go for a smoothie or some decadent banana ice cream? I can say I’ve tried both of those and I highly recommend Cocozia if it’s new to you!

  1. 1 cup chocolate CocoZia
  2. 1 pack Manitoba Harvest Chocolate Hemp Protein
  3. 1 Tbs Shredded coconut
  4. 1/2 tsp espresso powder
  5. 1/4 tsp maca powder
  6. 1 frozen banana
  7. ice
  8. Italian Espresso Coconut Chips, or other toasted coconut chips
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients into a blender except the coconut chips, and mix until well-combined. Once you get a smooth consistency (add ice or sweetener if needed), pour into a glass and top with the coconut chips. Sip through a straw or eat with a spoon and enjoy!

If you’ve ever tried acai and mocha before, you’d know it’s a terrific combo. This is a protein-packed shake that uses the Vanilla Blast Organic Brown Rice Powder made by Growing Naturals. What I love about this powder is that it’s made with sprouted, organic ingredients, is allergen-friendly and boosts a whopping 24g of protein in just one scoop! The vanilla flavor helps add sweetness to smoothies and shakes, and the powder has such a smooth consistency that I find myself adding even half a scoop to a lot of my blended drinks.

As usual, this coffee is completely organic and fair-trade along with being super delicious even on its own! In fact, this entire smoothie is organic as long as you use bananas that are. Some of the other ingredients that I used are Maca Powder, stevia, and of course Acai Juice from Zola. I know coffee and acai berry doesn’t sound like the greatest pairing but trust me, it really works in this smoothie!

Just a fair warning though, this is definitely a morning/breakfast shake. Unless you don’t get jittery or feel a strong buzz from caffeine, I would advise you not to make this smoothie close to bedtime. The acai, cold brew and maca all act as great energizers, but if you find that you are very sensitive then maybe go easy on those. You can use a decaffeinated coffee and leave out or use less of the maca powder. Feel free to experiment until you get your perfect smoothie in terms of flavor and consistency!

  1. 1/2 cup Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha coffee concentrate (or cooled, brewed coffee)
  2. 1/2 cup Zola Acai Juice
  3. 1/2 tsp maca powder (such as Navitas Naturals)
  4. 1/2 frozen banana
  5. Sweetener to taste (stevia, dates, etc)
  6. 1 scoop Growing Naturals Vanilla Blast Protein
  7. Handful of ice
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients into a blender and mix until you get a smooth consistency. Add extra ice, sweetener, or another half of a banana if desired.
Notes
  1. If you are sensitive to caffeine, perhaps try this recipe with decaf coffee and less (or no) maca powder.

I’ve been just a little obsessed with protein shakes lately. Ok, I’m pretty much always obsessed with them. If you haven’t gathered it already, I love coming up with creative smoothies recipes with flavor combos as unique as possible. However, I also like to use healthy ingredients I have on hand while putting a fun spin on the recipes. This high-in-protein shake happens to feature Mushroom Matrix, as another part of my recipe series this week that includes their Fit Matrix. In addition to Fit Matrix, I also added some other superfoods into this smoothie. There’s a company local to Colorado called KOLAT and they make Superfood Fusions in the form of nut butters that come in 4 different flavors. For this recipe, I used their Cherry Vanilla Almond to add protein, healthy fat and a whole list of other nutrients. Just to name a few, KOLAT’s superfood fusions contain vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Biotin, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, C, D2, E, K. I doubt that your standard jar of almond butter has any of those in it!

Mocha Cherry Maca Protein Shake Recipe @anotherhungryvegan.comThe Mocha Chameleon Cold Brew adds a pleasant coffee flavor with just a hint of cocoa to this treat. I don’t drink coffee every single day, but when I do I gravitate towards organic and fair trade varieties. These are not only healthier options, but they are also much more ethically sound and sustainable. I also used Sprout Living’s Chocolate Maca powder in this recipe, which is a favorite of mine for sure. I love the fact that it has such a malted chocolate taste that makes any smoothie taste like a milk chocolate milkshake. Plus, I can’t complain about the added protein either. As someone who does a lot of smoothies, it’s so nice to have an easy way to get in extra protein, fats and other nutrients that I don’t get out of my all-fruit smoothies.

Go ahead, make this shake. I know you want to! Even if you don’t have the same ingredients like the superfood nut butters or mocha cold brew coffee, there are simple substitutions that you can make. However, if you’re looking to try some new ingredients to supercharge your smoothies, the ones that I mentioned in this post are some of my favorites! I think sometimes it’s worth it to make a splurge on food purchases. Especially if they taste great, add extra nutrients into your diet (Vitamin B12 being the big one), and give you more energy!

  1. 1/2 cup Mocha Chameleon Cold Brew
  2. 1/2 cup vanilla non-dairy milk
  3. 2 scoops Epic Protein: Chocolate Maca
  4. 1-2 tsp Mushroom Matrix FIT
  5. 1 heaping Tbs Kolat Cherry Vanilla Almond, or other almond butter
  6. 1 frozen banana
  7. 1/2 cup frozen cherries
  8. 1-2 dates, or sweetener to taste
  9. ice
Instructions
  1. Place non-dairy milk, dates and nut butter into a blender and mix until smooth. Add in the other ingredients until completely mixed, and taste for sweetness. Add extra ice or sweetener if needed. Pour into one or two glasses to share, top with cherries and cacao nibs and enjoy!

Tahini Espresso Protein Shake

As promised, here is the first of a few recipes I will be featuring using Mushroom Matrix’s Fit. This protein shake happens to include a few of my favorite brands and flavors all together in one delicious (and totally healthy) post-workout shake. Who would’ve thought that things like tahini, coffee, pears, bananas and mushroom powder would go together? I wouldn’t have at first but trust me, this was one extremely happy accident that I discovered. I even boosted it with some Growing Naturals Vanilla Blast rice protein, so this entire smoothie has almost 30g of plant-based protein. The added Mushroom Matrix makes it complete with an added boost of immunity, while helping fight fatigue and increase your fitness performance. You don’t even have to drink this shake after a workout, but I can promise that it’s a super satisfying treat to have after your morning gym session or run outside. First off, I am a big fan of throwing some organic and fair trade coffee into a smoothie every now and then. Chameleon Cold Brew happens to be one of my favorites of all time, whether it’s poured over ice or enjoyed in a frozen coffee shake. I do recommend that if you make this recipe, that you have it in the morning because it does contain some caffeine. Though, I find that because this smoothie also has some fruit, healthy fats, and added protein, it doesn’t give you a crazy buzz or jittery feeling that coffee can give some people on an empty stomach.

You can modify the ingredients in this smoothie if you don’t have all of them on hand, but I truly recommend the protein and mushroom powders to aid your fitness goals and overall wellness. Sometimes, it’s worth it to splurge a little on products that will make you feel your best. Plus, they make quite a spectacular smoothie when combined!

Tahini Espresso Protein Shake

  1. 1/2 cup Chameleon Cold Brew black coffee concentrate
  2. 1/2 cup water
  3. 1 heaping Tbs tahini
  4. 1 pear, sliced
  5. 1/2 frozen banana
  6. 1/2 tsp maca
  7. 2 dates, or alternative sweetener
  8. 1 tsp Mushroom Matrix Fit
  9. 1 scoop vanilla plant-based protein (optional)
  10. ice
Instructions
  1. Place the coffee, water, dates and tahini into a blender and mix until smooth. Slowly add the pear, maca, frozen banana, and Mushroom Matrix. Lastly add the protein powder (if desired) and ice, and after blending test for sweetness. Add an extra date or half a banana if you like it a little more sweet. Serve it poured into a large glass or bottle topped with ground coffee or espresso powder.
